About the ship's history:

The RN Roma was an Italian battleship and the third ship of the Littorio-class. She was the first ship to be destroyed by a radio controlled bomb.

The Roma was laid down on 18 September 1938 and was launched on 9 June 1940. After another two years of fitting out, the ship was commissioned on 14 June 1942. She then arrived at Taranto, was assigned to the 9th Naval Division and participated in several training exercises. But due to the Italian Navy being desperately low on fuel, Roma never participated in any major combat missions.

Roma and her two sister ships were moved to Naples in November 1942, from where they departed again for La Spezia after an Air Raid of the US Air Force. Roma was then assigned as flagship of the Italian Navy, but remained Port for the first half of 1943. During that time Roma was damaged multiple times by air strikes on La Spezia and therefore she sailed to Genoa for repairs. After the repairs were completed she returned to La Spezia.

On 9 September 1943, after the proclamation of the Italian armistice, Roma along with many other principal units of the Italian Navy set sail for Malta. In response to that, the German Luftwaffe sent out Dornier Do 217s equipped with radio-controlled bombs to attack the ships and prevent them from falling into the hands of the Allies. The bombers began their attack at 15:37.

The first bomb that hit Roma passed through the ship and exploded beneath the keel of the ship, causing flooding which disabled several boilers and engine rooms. This led to the ship losing speed and power and at 16:02 another bomb hit Roma next to her second turret. This time the bomb exploded inside the ship, detonating the ammunition storage below the turret. The huge explosion from this caused severe flooding and the ship quickly took on list and ultimately capsized and broke in two.

The wreck of the Roma was discovered in June 2012 about 30km off the northern coast of Sardinia.
