About the ship's history:

The USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the second carrier of the Yorktown-class and was the sixth carrier of the US Navy. Enterprise was one of only three carriers which were commissioned before World War II to survive the war and with 20 awarded Battle Stars she was the most highly decorated warship of the US Navy during the Second World War.

Enterprise was laid down on 16 July 1934 and was commissioned on 12 May 1938. After first being stationed in San Diego, she was then transferred to Pearl Harbor where she transported a lot of planes to the American island bases in the Pacific. She departed for one such mission on 28 November 1941 and was scheduled to return to Pearl Harbor on the 6 December 1941, but bad weather conditions delayed her return, which resulted in an unintentional escaping from the Attack on Pearl Harbor on the 7 December 1941.

On 8 April 1942 Enterprise departed to escort her sistership USS Hornet during the Doolittle Raid, after which the two carriers headed back to Pearl Harbor. Soon after on 4 June 1942, Enterprise participated in the Battle of Midway. While its first attack wave, consisting of torpedo bombers failed to damage any the Japanese carriers failed, its second attack wave consisting of dive bombers managed hit to take out the two Japanese carriers Kaga and Akagi, while planes of her sistership USS Yorktown managed to disable the Japanese carrier Sōryū. Later the same day, another attack wave consisting of both Enterprise's and Yorktown's planes took out the last of the four Japanese carriers Hiryū.

During the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in late August 1942, Enterprise was heavily damaged by three direct bomb hits and four near misses but was able to return to Pearl Harbor under her own power. After she was repaired during September and October 1942, she took part in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, in which she was once more severely damaged by two bomb hits. Despite the damage she continued action and took on a lot of crew and planes of her sistership USS Hornet, which was sunk during the battle. This loss made Enterprise the only functioning carrier of the US Navy at the time. Still being repaired at sea, Enterprise soon returned to the battle.

Almost half a year later on 27 May 1943 in Pearl Harbor, Enterprise was the first carrier to be awarded with a Presidential Unit citation. During summer of 1943, as new carriers joined the US Navy, Enterprise received an extensive refit over the course of several months and after she returned to duty, she supported a lot of the allied landings on the Pacific islands. Enterprise also participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea on 19 June 1944 and the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 23 October 1944. From 19 February to 3 March 1945 she provided aerial support during the Battle of Iwo Jima and then later also supported the Battle of Okinawa on 5 April 1945 until she was damaged on 11 April 1945.

After the war she went on multiple voyages in the Pacific and to Europe, but as much newer and better carriers were commissioned, Enterprise was deemed unnecessary for the US Navy. Plans to turn the ship into a permanent memorial were suspended and the ship was ultimately scrapped from 1958 to 1960.
