About the ship's history:

The USS Fletcher was the lead ship and namesake of the American Fletcher-class, the most produced destroyer class in the Second World War, with a total of 175 units produced. During her service in WWII, she was awarded 15 battlestars, making her one of the most decorated American ships of the Second World War.

The Fletcher was laid down in New Jersey on 2 October 1941, launched on 3 May 1942 and commissioned on 30 June 1942. In October 1942 she played an important role in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal and also participated in the Battle of Tassafaronga in November the same year. She then continued to operate in the Solomon Islands in 1943 with a short visit to Sydney for a small refit before returning to the Solomons.

Fletcher returned to Pearl Harbor in December 1943. During 1944 she provided support for the landings on Kwajalein and Humboldt Bay, the invasion of Noemfoor, Sansapor and Morotai, as well as screening multiple convoys and task forces. In 1945 she participated in the landings in Nasugbu Bay, Puerto Princesa, Palawan and Zamboanga and once more escorted several convoys. After exercises off San Diego and in Hawaii she was docked at San Diego until her decommissioning on 15 January 1947.

Fletcher was recommissioned on 3 October 1949 as an escort destroyer. She then participated in the Korean War, patrolling the coast of Korea and also taking part in the Battle of Inchon. She returned to Pearl Harbor on 11 November 1950, then went back to Korea for screening in November 1951 before once more returning to Pearl Harbor in June 1952. During the Korean War Fletcher was awarded with five more battle stars.

After that, Fletcher was only deployed a few more times for screening before ultimately being decommissioned on 1 August 1969 and being sold for scrap on 22 February 1972.
